The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction Shortlist

Here we are then, the official Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction longlist.

When I commented on the longlist, the word of the night was wow and it’s the same again.

Wow: some big names and popular books have gone.

Wow: there are four titles in common with our Shadow Panel shortlist.

Wow: If you’re only reading the shortlist you’ve an absolute set of treats in store (although I implore you to read the longlist, it’s full of brilliant books).

The Dark Circle – Linda Grant

First Love – Gwendoline Riley

Do Not Say We Have Nothing –  Madeleine Thien

    • I think so but then was almost impossible not to get a strong shortlist from that longlist. I am most pleased at the inclusion of First Love, it was the one I was most disappointed didn’t make the Shadow Panel shortlist; it’s a superb novella.

  2. Yep, wow! As you know, I was led to believe the shortlist would be a bit different. Ha!
    Must say, I’m so so happy to see Do Not Say We Have Nothing and Stay With Me on there.
    But obviously gloomy about The Gustav Sonata being knocked off.
    I’m so intrigued to read First Love now after hearing such opposing views.
    Excited to see the actual winner and what we decide will be the winner from our own shadow list!

  4. I think if a majority of shadow panelists had read First Love, it might well have made our shortlist! As far as I know, only you and I read it, but we both adored it, sooo…
